Washington University in St. Louis

Universities and Colleges

Washington University in St. Louis, known as WashU, was founded in 1853 by a group of St. Louisans who wanted to address the lack of higher education opportunities in the Midwest. The new university had no funding from the state, a religious group or a single wealthy donor, so it grew slowly at first. It has six campuses in and around St. Louis, from the Danforth Campus to the Medical Campus and the rural Tyson Research Center. The university says it has been affiliated with 26 Nobel Laureates, many of whom did a significant portion of their award-winning work there.
