The magnetosphere is the region of space around Earth (and other magnetized planets) shaped and dominated by the planet's own magnetic field rather than by the solar wind flowing past it. Earth's magnetosphere deflects most of the charged particles the Sun sends outward, but funnels some of them down field lines into the upper atmosphere near the poles, where they collide with atmospheric gases and produce the aurora. The term was coined by physicist Thomas Gold in 1959.
