Fermilab, the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, is a United States Department of Energy particle physics laboratory in Batavia, Illinois. It was founded in 1969 as the National Accelerator Laboratory, with the physicist Robert Rathbun Wilson as its founding director, and was renamed in 1974 in honor of Enrico Fermi.
