Ghent University was founded by King William I in 1816 and inaugurated on 9 October 1817 at Ghent City Hall, which is why it counts its encouragement of critical and independent thinking from 1817. The first professorial staff had 16 members, including 9 foreigners, mainly Northern Dutch and Germans, and 190 students registered in the four original faculties of Arts, Law, Medicine and Sciences. The Aula Academica, a ceremonial hall on the site of a former Jesuit church, was inaugurated in 1827. Over its first 200 years the university says it has counted many eminent scientists and even Nobel Prize winners.
