Cyril Stanley Smith founded the Institute for the Study of Metals at the University of Chicago in 1946, after leaving Los Alamos, to bring together metallurgists, physicists and chemists studying the structure of matter rather than keeping each specialty in its own department. Its interdisciplinary model, organised around structure rather than around a single class of material, is one of the direct institutional ancestors of the university materials science department as later universities came to define it.
