Franz Bopp

Franz Bopp was a German philologist widely regarded as a founder of comparative Indo-European linguistics as a rigorous academic discipline. In his 1816 study of the conjugation system of Sanskrit compared with Greek, Latin, Persian and the Germanic languages, Bopp systematically demonstrated that these languages shared a common grammatical structure inherited from a single ancestral source rather than having borrowed features from one another, moving the study of language relationships from informal observation toward disciplined comparative method. He went on to produce a multi-volume comparative grammar of the Indo-European languages, published across the 1830s and 1840s, that became a standard reference work and helped establish comparative philology as a recognized university subject. Bopp held a professorship at the University of Berlin for most of his career, and his methodological emphasis on systematically comparing grammatical forms across related languages directly shaped the generation of comparative linguists, including Jacob Grimm, who worked in the following decades.
