Linguistics is the scientific study of human language: its sounds, grammar, meaning, and use, and how languages change over time and relate to one another. It draws evidence from thousands of living and historical languages rather than from any one of them, and it has no single founding text or date; its modern methods took shape gradually across the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Central QuestionSourced to the subject's own accountIs there a universal structure shared by every human language, and if so, does it reflect something innate about how the human mind is built to acquire and use language? 1 ScopeSourced to the subject's own accountLinguistics is the scientific study of human language, covering its sound systems, grammar, meaning, use in context, and change over time and across the roughly seven thousand languages spoken today. 1 SignificanceSourced to the subject's own accountFerdinand de Saussure's lectures, published posthumously in 1916 as Course in General Linguistics, reframed language as a structured system of signs to be studied on its own terms at a given point in time, founding the structuralist approach that shaped linguistics through the twentieth century. 1 Disputed
Founded YearSourced to the subject's own accountSir William Jones's 1786 address to the Asiatic Society of Bengal, proposing a common ancestor for Sanskrit, Greek and Latin, is commonly cited as founding comparative and historical linguistics; the discipline's roots reach back much further, to Panini's Sanskrit grammar of around the 4th century BCE, and it only became a university subject through 19th century scholars such as Franz Bopp and Jacob Grimm. Cross-Tradition Connections
