Berthold Delbruck was a German linguist and a founder of comparative syntax within Indo-European studies. Delbruck applied the comparative method, previously used mainly to reconstruct the sounds and forms of the reconstructed Proto-Indo-European language, systematically to syntax, publishing detailed studies of the syntax of Vedic Sanskrit including Altindische Syntax and later a multi-volume comparative syntax of the Indo-European languages. Working alongside Karl Brugmann, Delbruck co-authored the Grundriss der vergleichenden Grammatik der indogermanischen Sprachen, contributing the volumes on syntax to this standard reference work in comparative Indo-European grammar. Delbruck held a professorship at the University of Jena for most of his career and is credited with establishing syntax as a serious and methodologically rigorous branch of comparative linguistics, rather than a secondary concern behind phonology and morphology.
