Sheila Blumstein

Sheila E. Blumstein is an American linguist born in 1944 and professor emerita of cognitive, linguistic, and psychological sciences at Brown University, where she held the Albert D. Mead professorship and served as interim president of the university from February 2000 to July 2001. She earned a BA in linguistics from the University of Rochester in 1965 and a PhD in linguistics from Harvard University in 1970, and her research investigates the neural basis of speech and language processing using lesion studies and functional neuroimaging. She held a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Radcliffe Institute Fellowship, received the Claude Pepper Award from the National Institutes of Health, and was elected a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Linguistic Society of America.
