Zellig Harris

Zellig Harris was an American linguist at the University of Pennsylvania who developed methods for analyzing language based on the distribution of linguistic elements, the patterns of where a given sound, word or structure can and cannot occur relative to others, an approach that became a defining method of American structural linguistics in the mid-twentieth century. Harris extended distributional analysis to the level of whole sentences and discourse, developing early formal techniques for describing how sentences transform into related sentences, work that laid essential groundwork for the transformational grammar later developed by his student Noam Chomsky. He also did pioneering work applying rigorous linguistic methods to the analysis of connected discourse and, later in his career, to problems in information retrieval and what became computational linguistics. Harris's emphasis on formal, mathematically explicit methods for describing language structure had a lasting influence on both structural and generative approaches to linguistics in the decades that followed.
