Jan Niecislaw Ignacy Baudouin de Courtenay (13 March 1845 - 3 November 1929) was a prominent Polish and Russian linguist and Slavist, best known for his theory of the phoneme and phonetic alternations. He spent most of his career at Imperial Russian universities before returning to Warsaw in 1919, and his 1876-1877 lectures laid foundations that three major schools of twentieth-century phonology (Leningrad, Moscow and Prague) later built on.
