Brian D. Joseph

Brian D. Joseph is an American linguist born November 22, 1951, who specializes in historical linguistics and language change and holds the position of Distinguished University Professor of Linguistics and Kenneth E. Naylor Professor of South Slavic Linguistics at Ohio State University, where he spent his entire career before retiring in June 2024. His research covers historical linguistics, Greek and Albanian, Balkan linguistics, language contact and morphological theory, including work on infinitive loss in Balkan languages; his publications include The Synchrony and Diachrony of the Balkan Infinitive (1983) and the co-authored Modern Greek (1987). He served as president of the Linguistic Society of America in 2019 and co-founded the Journal of Greek Linguistics in 2000.
