Jens C. Skou was a Danish biochemist awarded a share of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery of the sodium potassium ATPase, the enzyme that actively pumps sodium and potassium ions across cell membranes, the first ion transporting enzyme ever identified.
