Stanford Moore was an American biochemist who lived from 1913 to 1982. He shared the 1972 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Christian B. Anfinsen and William Howard Stein for work done at Rockefeller University on the structure of the enzyme ribonuclease and its connection between chemical structure and catalytic activity. He graduated summa cum laude from Vanderbilt University in 1935 and earned his doctorate in organic chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1938, then spent his entire professional career at the Rockefeller Institute, later Rockefeller University, apart from government service during World War II. In 1958, with William H. Stein, he developed the first automated amino acid analyzer, and in 1959 the two announced the first complete determination of the amino acid sequence of an enzyme, ribonuclease, work cited in their Nobel award.
