Gregory Ward

Gregory Ward is an American linguist born October 8, 1955, and professor of linguistics, gender and sexuality studies, and, by courtesy, philosophy at Northwestern University, where he earned a BA in linguistics from the University of California, Berkeley, and a PhD in linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1985 under Ellen F. Prince. His research addresses pragmatics, particularly the meanings associated with specific syntactic constructions and intonational contours, including fall rise intonation, anaphora, information structure, and demonstratives, and he co-authored The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language along with Information Status and Noncanonical Word Order in English. He chaired the Northwestern linguistics department from 1999 to 2004, was elected a fellow of the Linguistic Society of America in 2009, and received the E. LeRoy Hall Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2012.
