Howard Lasnik

Howard Lasnik is an American linguist born July 3, 1945, who worked primarily in syntax within a Chomskyan framework and is one of only a few linguists to have co-written articles with his doctoral advisor, Noam Chomsky. His research addressed binding theory, emphasizing semantic reference over mere co-indexation, ellipsis phenomena including sluicing, pseudogapping and VP-ellipsis, and case theory and anaphora. He earned degrees from Carnegie Institute of Technology (1967), Harvard (1969) and MIT (PhD, 1972), taught at the University of Connecticut from 1972 and then the University of Maryland from 2002 until his 2023 retirement, and supervised more than sixty-five doctoral dissertations while authoring textbooks widely used in graduate linguistics programs.
