Bernard Comrie

Bernard Sterling Comrie is a British linguist born May 23, 1947, in Sunderland, England, and a Fellow of the British Academy recognized as a leading expert in linguistic typology and linguistic universals. His research centers on comparative language structures, especially linguistic typology and the Caucasian languages, and he served as professor and director at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig for seventeen years while also holding a Distinguished Professorship at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His major publications include Language Universals and Linguistic Typology: Syntax and Morphology (1981) and The World Major Languages (1987), and he was elected a foreign member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2000.
