Mark Aronoff

Mark Aronoff is a Canadian-American linguist born in January 1949 in Montreal, Quebec, who is distinguished professor emeritus at Stony Brook University and specializes in morphology, the study of word structure and formation. He completed his doctoral research under Morris Halle at MIT in 1974 and authored the influential Word Formation in Generative Grammar (1976) and Morphology by Itself (1994). He served as editor of the journal Language, published by the Linguistic Society of America, from 1995 to 2001 and as president of the Society in 2005, and he spent twelve years, from 1998 to 2010, as Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education within the State University of New York system.
