Bruce Hayes

Bruce Hayes is an American linguist born June 9, 1955, in Seattle, Washington, who is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at UCLA and specializes in phonology and generative grammar. He earned his PhD from MIT in 1980 under Morris Halle, and his most influential contribution, Metrical Stress Theory: Principles and Case Studies (1995), presents a typologically grounded framework for analyzing stress systems across languages; his other research addresses phonetically motivated phonology and language learnability, and he co-authored a 2008 introductory phonology textbook. He was inducted as a Fellow of the Linguistic Society of America in 2009.
