Paul Kiparsky

Rene Paul Victor Kiparsky is a Finnish linguist born January 28, 1941, in Helsinki, who is a professor of linguistics at Stanford University holding the Bass Professorship in the School of Humanities and Sciences. He is known for introducing the elsewhere principle and the concept of phonological opacity, including feeding, bleeding, counterfeeding and counterbleeding, and for developing Lexical Phonology and Morphology and its successor, Stratal Optimality Theory. He has also contributed to historical linguistics, generative metrics and morphosyntax, with particular expertise in Finnish grammar and in the work of the ancient Sanskrit grammarian Panini; he earned his PhD under Morris Halle at MIT in 1965 before moving to Stanford in 1984.
