Sextil Pușcariu

Sextil Pușcariu was an Austro-Hungarian-born Romanian linguist and philologist who became one of the leading scholars of the Romanian language. Educated in France and Germany, he worked as a professor at Czernowitz in the Duchy of Bukovina and was active in Transylvania's cultural life. He began his scholarly career in 1906 when he was tasked with compiling a general dictionary of the Romanian language, a project that grew into a major, decades-long undertaking. His research spanned dialectology, etymology and the history of the Romanian language, and he published widely across these disciplines.
