Joan Maling

Joan Maling is an American linguist born November 15, 1946, in Baltimore, Maryland, who taught at Brandeis University beginning in 1972 and later served as a program director at the National Science Foundation from 2003 until 2021, now professor emerita at Brandeis. Her research centers on the syntax of Icelandic, growing out of her 1973 MIT doctoral dissertation on classical Arabic metrics written under Morris Halle, and she served as founding co-editor and later editor in chief of the journal Natural Language and Linguistic Theory between 1983 and 2003. She was president of the Linguistic Society of America in 2014.
