Marianne Mithun

Linguistics

Marianne Mithun is an American linguist born in 1946 who specializes in Native American languages and language typology and has been a professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, since 1986. She earned her PhD from Yale University in 1974 with a dissertation on Tuscarora grammar and has conducted extensive fieldwork on Iroquoian languages including Mohawk, Cayuga and Tuscarora, as well as Central Pomo and Chumashan languages. Her book The Languages of Native North America (1999), organized by grammatical categories and language families, won the Leonard Bloomfield Book Award in 2002; she served as founding president of the Society for Linguistic Anthropology and as president of the Linguistic Society of America in 2020.
