Severo Ochoa was a Spanish-born physician and biochemist who became an American citizen in 1956. He is known for his discoveries regarding the mechanisms involved in the biological synthesis of ribonucleic acid and deoxyribonucleic acid. He shared the 1959 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Arthur Kornberg for this work, and later received the National Medal of Science.
