Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew is a major botanical research institution and public garden in London, founded in 1759 as a nine-acre garden within the pleasure grounds at Kew Palace by Princess Augusta, mother of King George III. Its scientific reach expanded greatly in the 1770s under the direction of the naturalist Joseph Banks, who used his position to send plant collectors around the world. Today Kew holds one of the largest herbarium collections anywhere and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
