William Jackson Hooker (1785-1865) was an English botanist and botanical illustrator who became the first director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, when it passed into state ownership in 1841. He founded the Kew Herbarium and greatly expanded the gardens' collections and infrastructure during his fifty-year career in natural history. His own botanical expertise focused especially on mosses, liverworts, and ferns, and he published more than twenty major works.
