Hermann Bondi was an Austrian-born British mathematician and cosmologist who, with Thomas Gold, proposed the steady-state theory of the universe in 1948, reasoning from the perfect cosmological principle that the universe looks the same at all times as well as from all places. The theory was largely abandoned after the 1965 discovery of the cosmic microwave background, which the rival big bang theory had predicted and steady-state theory could not satisfactorily explain.
