Nicolaas Bloembergen

Nicolaas Bloembergen (1920-2017) was a Dutch-American physicist who held professorships at Harvard University, the University of Arizona and Leiden University. He shared the 1981 Nobel Prize in Physics with Arthur Schawlow and Kai Siegbahn for founding the field of nonlinear optics, in which multiple laser beams are combined to produce light at new wavelengths, greatly expanding the frequency range available to laser spectroscopy.
