John Frederick Hawley was an American astrophysicist who lived from August 23, 1958 to December 12, 2021, a professor of astronomy at the University of Virginia. He shared the 2013 Shaw Prize in Astronomy with Steven Balbus for their work on the magnetorotational instability.
