Grigory Margulis is a Russian-American mathematician known for his work on lattices in Lie groups and for introducing methods from ergodic theory into diophantine approximation. His results include the superrigidity theorem, the arithmeticity theorem, and work on expander graphs and the Oppenheim conjecture. He won the Fields Medal in 1978, the Wolf Prize in 2005, and the Abel Prize in 2020.
