Geoffrey Marcy

Geoffrey William Marcy is an American astronomer born September 29, 1954, who played a pioneering role in detecting and characterizing exoplanets, holding a professorship at the University of California, Berkeley. His research teams discovered roughly 70 of the first 100 known exoplanets, including the first planetary system around a Sun-like star, Upsilon Andromedae, and he served as a co-investigator on the NASA Kepler space telescope mission. He shared the 2005 Shaw Prize in Astronomy with Michel Mayor. Following a Title IX investigation that concluded in 2015 he had violated the University of California, Berkeley own sexual harassment policy, Marcy resigned from the university, and his membership in the National Academy of Sciences was rescinded in 2021.
