Johannes Phocylides Holwarda (1618-1651) was a Frisian astronomer, physician, and philosopher who served as a professor of philosophy at the University of Franeker from 1639 until his death. He is remembered for discovering the periodic behavior of the star Mira, determining through systematic observation that it disappears and reappears on a cycle of roughly three hundred thirty days.
