Richard Adolf Zsigmondy (1865-1929) was an Austrian-born chemist recognized for his research into colloids, for which he received the 1925 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He co-invented the slit-ultramicroscope, a device that made particles too small for ordinary light microscopes observable, along with a series of membrane filters used to study colloidal solutions.
