James Batcheller Sumner (1887-1955) was an American biochemist who discovered that enzymes could be crystallized, the first proof that enzymes are proteins. He shared the 1946 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with John Howard Northrop and Wendell Meredith Stanley for this work.
