Thomas Jaggar was an American geologist who founded the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and directed it from 1912 to 1940, establishing the first permanent American observatory dedicated to continuous scientific monitoring of an active volcano, Kilauea. His resolve to found it grew from surveying the devastation of the 1902 Mont Pelee and La Soufriere eruptions in the Caribbean. Jaggar earned a doctorate in geology from Harvard in 1897 and later headed the geology department at MIT before moving to Hawaii.
