Johan Herman Lie Vogt

Johan Herman Lie Vogt was a Norwegian geologist and petrologist born October 14, 1858, in Tvedestrand, Norway, who died January 3, 1932, in Trondheim, Norway, and who conducted research on silicate melts, Norwegian marble, iron works and iron ore deposits, publishing his selected works on these subjects between 1895 and 1910, and who developed the geology department of the Norwegian Institute of Technology; he was a nephew of the mathematician Sophus Lie and the father of the geologist Thorolf Vogt, who succeeded him academically. He served as professor of metallurgy at the University of Christiania from 1886 to 1912 and as the first professor of geology at the Norwegian Institute of Technology from 1912 to 1928. He received the Wollaston Medal from the Geological Society of London in 1932.
