The University of Oslo is the oldest university in Norway. King Frederick VI of Denmark approved it in 1811 as the Royal Frederick University, and it opened in 1813 in Christiania, the former name of Oslo, with 7 professors and 18 students. Its Astronomical Observatory was built in 1833, and it moved into its stately buildings at Karl Johans gate in 1852. It enrolled its first female student, Ida Cecilie Thoresen, in 1882, and in 1906 it appointed W. C. Brøgger as its first rector, the title for its president.
