Joe Hin Tjio (1919-2001) was an Indonesian-born American cytogeneticist who determined in 1955, in work published the following year, that the normal number of human chromosomes is forty-six rather than the forty-eight previously believed. This finding proved crucial to understanding developmental disorders caused by chromosomal abnormalities, including Down syndrome.
