James Priess is an American developmental biologist who directs the Priess Lab at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle. His research uses the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans to study how a single fertilized cell develops into a complex multicellular animal, examining the changes in cell shape that transform the embryo from round to worm shaped, how the early embryo distinguishes its inside from its outside during gastrulation, and how the germ line and other cell fates are specified during early embryogenesis. He shared the 2022 Gruber Prize in Genetics with Ruth Lehmann and Geraldine Seydoux for contributions to developmental genetics.
