Dukinfield Henry Scott was a British botanist and paleobotanist born November 28, 1854, in London, England, who died January 29, 1934, and whose textbook Studies in Fossil Botany, published in 1900 following his lectures in paleobotany at University College London, is credited with having influenced and helped grow the discipline; he also published An Introduction to Structural Botany in 1894 and The Evolution of Plants in 1911. He served as the first keeper of the Jodrell Laboratory at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, from 1892 to 1906, and was noted as the first lecturer in botany at University College London to allow women to attend his classes. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1894, won the Royal Medal in 1906, the Gold Medal of the Linnean Society in 1921, the Darwin Medal in 1926, served as president of the Linnean Society from 1908 to 1912, and received the Wollaston Medal in 1928.
