Adolphe-Theodore Brongniart

Adolphe-Theodore Brongniart was a French botanist born January 14, 1801, in Paris, the son of the geologist Alexandre Brongniart, who died February 18, 1876, in Paris, and who spent his career at the Museum national d Histoire naturelle in Paris studying the connections between extinct and living plants, earning recognition as the father of paleobotany. His major work, Histoire des vegetaux fossiles, published between 1828 and 1837, set out a comprehensive classification arranging fossil plants alongside their modern equivalents and became foundational to later paleobotanical research. He co-founded the Annales des Sciences Naturelles in 1824 and established the Societe Botanique de France in 1854, serving as its first president. He was elected a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in 1851, made a Commander of the Legion of Honor in 1864, and received the Wollaston Medal in 1841.
