Harold Basil Christian was a Cape Colony born Rhodesian farmer, horticulturist and botanist. Educated at Eton College, he served with the Imperial Light Horse during the Second Boer War, fighting in the Siege of Ladysmith, and afterward worked in South Africa for De Beers and as a mining engineer. In 1911 he moved to Rhodesia, where he bought a large farm named Ewanrigg and became known for his study and cultivation of aloe there. On his death the estate was given to the state and became a national park.
