The American Museum of Natural History was founded in 1869 in New York City and built one of the largest anthropological collections and research departments in the world. Margaret Mead joined its curatorial staff in 1926, shortly after her Samoa fieldwork, and remained associated with the museum for the rest of her career, eventually becoming curator emeritus of ethnology.
