Henry Fairfield Osborn was an American paleontologist and geologist born August 8, 1857, in Fairfield, Connecticut, United States, who died November 6, 1935, in Garrison, New York, and who is credited with naming the dinosaurs Tyrannosaurus and Velociraptor, developing a widely used system of names for dental cusps and other features of mammalian teeth, and conducting research on fossil proboscideans, the group including elephants and their extinct relatives. He served as professor of anatomy at Columbia University and as president of the American Museum of Natural History for twenty five years, and co-founded the American Eugenics Society. He received the Hayden Memorial Geological Award in 1914, the Cullum Geographical Medal in 1919, the Daniel Giraud Elliot Medal in 1929, was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, and received the Wollaston Medal in 1926.
