George Ellery Hale was an American astrophysicist who built the world's largest telescope at the Yerkes Observatory before conceiving and founding the Mount Wilson Observatory in 1904, where his recruitment of Harlow Shapley and Edwin Hubble helped produce some of the era's most significant astronomical discoveries.
