Robert Hofstadter was an American physicist. He studied the scattering of electrons by atomic nuclei, work that revealed information about the internal structure and size of protons and neutrons. He received the 1961 Nobel Prize in Physics for his pioneering studies of electron scattering in atomic nuclei and his consequent discoveries concerning the structure of nucleons.
