Rudolf Clausius (1822 to 1888) was a German mathematical physicist who formulated the second law of thermodynamics and gave the science of thermodynamics its name. He restated Sadi Carnot's principle on heat engine efficiency on a sounder physical footing, and in 1865 introduced the term entropy for the quantity of thermal energy in a system that is unavailable for work.
