Al-Khwarizmi was a scholar at the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, born around 780 CE though no source records his exact birth date. His book on al-jabr wa'l-muqabala, completed between 813 and 833, gave algebra both its name and its first systematic treatment of linear and quadratic equations, and his arithmetic treatise carried the Hindu-Arabic numeral system into the Middle East and Europe. His own Latinized name, Algoritmi, is the root of the word algorithm.
