Alexander Mikhailovich Prokhorov was a Soviet physicist, born in Australia to Russian parents who returned to Russia in 1923. His research in quantum electronics and optics contributed to the development of the laser and the maser. He shared the 1964 Nobel Prize in Physics with Charles Townes and Nikolay Basov for this fundamental work.
