Allen Newell was an American researcher who, working with Herbert Simon, built some of the first programs to model human reasoning computationally, including the Logic Theorist (1956) and the General Problem Solver (1957). Newell argued that intelligence, whether human or artificial, could be studied as symbol manipulation carried out by a physical system, a position known as the physical symbol system hypothesis that shaped both artificial intelligence and cognitive psychology for decades. He spent most of his career at Carnegie Mellon University.
